2002 Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park

Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park is a great place to visit for a walk in the woods or a picnic. It has a great trail system right in the middle of town. Jen and I spent a January afternoon in the park practicing our Amateur Radio direction finding skills. One of us would hide with a radio transmitter and the other would have to locate the transmitter. It was a little chilly, but otherwise great fun.

Near one of the more popular trailheads at a parking lot, the soil has been worn away to expose the white limestone underneath.
The trees here are all cedars, also known as scrub junipers.
Jen, getting ready to go hide with one of the transmitters.
Jen decided to hide very close to one of the branches of Walnut Creek.
Ken, approaching the hidden transmitter. He's holding a directional antenna made from two feet of PVC tubing and lengths of steel tape measure cut to the appropriate lengths. This makes for a lightweight antenna that can stand up to tree limbs. Jen, with the camera, was hiding nearby.
Another view of Walnut Creek near where Jen was hiding. The creek has exposed limestone on either side. In places, you can walk along the exposed limestone banks of the creek for hundreds of meters before you encounter trees that grow right to the water, or a cliff.
Next, it was Ken's turn to hide and Jen's turn to hunt. It looks like she found the transmitter!
