2007 San Diego Zoo

Jen and I spent the better part of a day in December at the San Diego Zoo. Our favorite exhibits were the monkeys. The zoo was surprisingly hilly - it was a good walk. Some animals were not on exhibit when we visited, including the Galapagos tortoises. It was our first trip to San Diego.

The entrance to the zoo. We visited on a weekday, so there were not as many crowds.
One of the first things we did was ride the gondola to the back of the park. This was a small deer that was being shy.
A kind of antelope.
Another species of antelope.
Zebras.
Monkeys!
The monkeys were the most fun to watch.
This monkey was watching several little ones playing below.
Two hippopotamuses, seen through the glass wall of their pond.
They were very big.
The panda bears were napping when we visited.
This one was napping in a tree.
Sleep time.
A cheetah.
Another cat, hanging out in the sunshine.
Another cat. Some of the big cats seemed pretty content in their habitats, whereas others almost seemed like they were in distress.
A small, rock climbing antelope.
A meerkat.
Meerkats in the afternoon.
This one was digging out the entrance to the burrow.
Two alpacas.
Tree kangaroos.
A koala bear.
Another koala, sleeping.
Some birds.
More meerkats.
An elephant. The zoo is building a new, much more expansive and natural habitat for the elephants.
This elephant was playing with some old barrels.
The zookeeper was walking the elephants for exercise and to get them used to walking into the transportation cages they will use to relocate the animals to the new habitat.
A bear.
These were some very large birds.
Gorillas.

The same pair of gorillas.
Some more hippopotamuses.
